About Us

Welcome to Twyford Tuition!

Dear Parent,

Welcome!

I wanted to share with you the story of how Twyford Tuition was born.

As a parent of a summer baby, I was always worried my daughter would be left behind. I read books on how September babies had an advantage that could last a lifetime. Indeed when my daughter began school , I felt she was tiny – both physically and mentally compared to her peers! However I was determined that my daughter’s date of birth would not be a hinderance! So I designed a programme for us to work through together, which was the birth of Twyford Tuition. By key stage 2, she was assessed to be academically 2 years above her age. While the rest of her class were learning their 2x tables my daughter had mastered her times tables up to 12.

Many parents start tutoring their children at year 4 or year 5 for the 11+. This can be an overwhelming and stressful experience for a child. The only reason they are studying is to pass a test! There is no love or enjoyment in the subjects themselves.

At Twyford Tuition our courses start from year 2 all the way up to year 11. But what they all have in common is our belief that children learn at their best when they are interested in a subject, feel safe to ask any question, and above all, are enjoying themselves.
In summary, learning must be enjoyable- which was the main goal, while designing our workshops. For our comprehension classes, we focus on a reading book to do vocabulary exercises.  This is a great way to get children engaged and also interested in reading. They find it fun and hence are motivated to read and do the exercises based on the book.  All our group comprehension workshops also include group reading sessions, to encourage confidence and self-esteem.

Our motto at Twyford Tuition is to enable children to thrive, by making learning fun. Children are learning at their peak, when they are happy and enjoying the class. Our tutors will motivate your children and encourage them in the best possible way.

Have a look through our testimonials, our videos, our workshops – and let us work with you, to help improve your child’s skills in Maths, English & Science.

We look forward to welcoming you at Twyford Tuition!

Brief overview of our courses

All our courses are taught online via Microsoft Teams and occasionaly Zoom. Despite our courses being taught online, at Twyford Tuition we aim for children to be writing instead of using the keyboard and to be looking at books instead of the computer screen.  The lessons take place over a computer however we have workbooks in most of our lessons, so children are looking, working and writing in a workbook, which they can also complete the work at home.

The following courses are taught at Twyford Tuition, which can be attended as 1:1 or part of a group (max 8);-

Comprehension
After completing our comprehension workshops in year 6, your children should become an expert in reading comprehension. Our tutors are very experienced and teach students efficient strategies to enhance their comprehension skills. They teach students the simple methods to analyze and draw conclusions from the text. They teach them the main strategies of reviewing, picturing, questioning, and evaluating text structure that help them improve their reading comprehension skills. They give students reading activities which help them in decoding and expanding a good understanding of the text.

Vocabulary & reading

From verbs to adjectives and beyond, a strong vocabulary facilitates precise writing and helps the student with their writing. As children expand their vocabulary, they will be better able to describe certain situations, emotions and ideas, which will develop their writing to a much greater level. The most valuable vocabulary is that which you can retrieve and use at any point, for example in an exam. Learning vocabulary is extremely important– however, just as important – use them correctly.

Building vocabulary is easiest when you encounter words in context. Seeing how words appear in a novel can be far more helpful than seeing them in vocabulary lists. Not only will you be confronted with unfamiliar words, but you will also see how they are used.  Instead of a vocabulary list, reading is so much more engaging and fun for kids and a great way to learn vocabulary.  Which is why we have a 20 week course at Twyford Tuition dedicated to Comprehension, Reading and Vocabulary.

Creative writing
Improving your child’s writing skills will not only take your child’s english to the next level, but it also leads to stronger communication. When your child is able to put together the right sentence in a story or poem, they also engage the same parts of their brain that are active in everyday writing and speaking. Creative writing is required for some 11+ exams and will play an essential role in your child’s writing development, all the way to English GCSE and further.

11+ & Foundation
If you or your child have a favourite private or grammer school they wish to attend, they will have to sit 11+ entry exams.  We have a excellent 11+ course and foundation course to enable your children to be successfully prepared for these exams.

Maths

The importance of developing good maths practices in primary school, can’t be stressed enough. Our tutors will guide your child through maths problems and will encourage them to solve problems for themelves by  teaching them the concept.  Students will learn there is more than one way to solve a problem. Our tutors offer lots of maths practice by working through lots of questions with your child, in our Twyford Tuition Maths workbooks.

Maths, English & Science
These are three core subjects, your child will be studying until 16 years of age (GCSE) & possibly further. They will do exams, including GCSE’s in these subjects and hence why at Twyford Tuition we provide extra courses in primary and high school to ensure your child is happy and successful in these core subjects. Not only will your child need to sit exams in these subjects at GCSE, english and maths skills are essential building blocks for any career. When you apply for a job, there is usually a description of the role, which is called a Job Description. This sets out the skills and qualifications an employer is looking for. Many jobs will ask you to have GCSE english and maths, and sometimes GCSE science too.  This is again highlighting the importance of your child doing well in these three subjects.

For everyday life, your child will need Science, Maths and English too! Whether it’s following a recipe (English!) or to work out all the measurements (Maths!) or to make the final meal, (combine all the ingredients; Science!), these three subjects are essential to everyday living.

For many people maths, science and english are the most challenging subjects in school. Students that struggle find it helpful to get personalized one-on-one tutoring. At Twyford Tuition are tutors are patient and have a strong knowledge of the concepts that the student is struggling with. With some guided problem-solving and encouragement, your children will be succeeding in these subjects in no time. We also offer group classes, which help cement children’s understanding of these subjects.
